Otto Dix - Portrait of Sylvia Von Harden

Color Study

The subject in the painting does not look like a general feminine type of woman. Only few things such as the dark lipstick and the red-checkered dress seem to represent the subject’s gender. Even though there are only few things that represent the subject’s gender, the whole vibe of the painting seems feminized due to the colors used in the painting. The usage of a variety of red colors in the subject’s dress, walls, cigarettes, drink, and even the subject’ skin tone represents the feminine impression. In addition, the subject’s awkwardly positioned posture and the empty facial expression were significant for the characteristics of the painting. The subject’s vague and pointless stare harmonizes with the awkwardly positioned posture. Her hands are very large in comparison to her body proportions. The unnaturally long fingers of the subject seem to magnify the cigarette between her fingers. She seems to be coping with her hopelessness with cigarettes and cocktail. The contrast between the vibrant colors, and the depressingly vague facial expression and the unnatural postures create uncanny combinations.
